When the 435th's 144 gliders, loaded with airborne infantry and equipment, cut loose over the landing area, they came under heavy ground fire with substantial casualties among the infantry and glider crews. Once on the ground, they continued to be hit by sniper and mortar fire that had to be subdued before they could move to their assigned area of two crossroads--one that would earn the name "Burp Gun Corner." There they cleared several houses, taking a large number of prisoners before digging in for the night.

"The Battle of Burp Gun Corner," a unique event in Air Force history, was covered by Stars and Stripes but then slipped into obscurity. In March 1995, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ronald R. Fogleman learned from retired Maj. Charles Gordon of the heroic actions of these glider pilots turned infantry and directed that appropriate awards be made to those who took part in the fighting. At the 435th Troop Carrier Reunion in October 1995, Flight Officers Jella, Deshurley, Campbell, and Hurley each were awarded the Silver Star. All others who fought in the battle were awarded the Bronze Star, but many of those more than 280 men had died before their heroism was recognized.

H hour came; the men spread out in an extended formation and started out across the fields to our front. As they advanced, the sergeant and I searched for targets on which to drop shells as we directed the mortars to the rear. The G.I.'s got half way across the field when burp guns seemed to open up from everywhere. It was the Germans' turn to do the real damage. Our boys tried to return the fire and continue to advance - the captain kept yelling "Keep moving" over the walkie-talkie to the platoon leader out there - but their movement was easily picked up in the open field, and they only had rifles and a couple of automatic rifles with which to fire back, whereas the Jerries had several machine guns in good camouflaged positions. They pinned the G.I.'s there, and holding them with small arms fire, threw in artillery as well.

interessant, bedankt, verder zoekend op google met mp 40 en burp gun geeft het volgende antwoord:"I can hear burp-guns, and the bullets are coming this way." (A "burp-gun" is the name given with GI humor to the very effective German machine gun which was fired in bursts.)
Mp40: "Most common German submachine gun of WWII. Called the "burp gun" by G.I.'s, the misnamed "Schmeiser" was widely used by FJ units in all theaters throughout the war. "
Once on the ground, they continued to be hit by sniper and mortar fire that had to be subdued before they could move to their assigned area of two crossroads--one that would earn the name "Burp Gun Corner."
