VIIIth British Corps crosses the river Odon
Operation Epsom, from 26 to 30 June 1944, enables the Allied forces to break through the German frontline west of Caen, and to cross the river Odon. But the progression is difficult facing the two SS Armoured Korps which occupy the area. On 29 June the Germans counter-attack between Noyers and Evrecy; the IInd SS Panzer Korps springs and encounters the simultaneous offensive of the VIIIth British Corps. The lack of coordination and the intervention of the allied naval artillery stop dead the Germans; the attack launched by the Ist SS Panzer Korps toward Carpiquet is repelled in the same way. General von Schweppenburg is dismissed after these failures. The combattants of the two sides dig themselves, Fontaine-Étoupefour is liberated and stands on the frontline; Hill 112, the most coveted objective remain in the German hands until 10 July.
