Programma Wapenstilstand 2009 - Ieper

Gedurende vier dagen zal de Royal British Legion tienduizend kartonnen poppies/klaprozen planten op de flanken van de Menenpoort, gebaseerd op 2008. Op deze poppies staan boodschappen voor de slachtoffers van de Eerste- EN Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Tijdens ger planten zullen nog blanco poppies beschikbaar zijn om toe te voegen aan het immense Poppy-veld. Het veld is te bezichtigingen vanaf maandag 9 november tot vrijdag 13 november. Indien er mensen een naam willen plaatsen, mogen een PB sturen naar me.

20:15 Stadsschouwburg, Alphonse Vandenpeereboomplein in Ieper. Elk jaar nodigen het Vlaams Vredesinstituut, het Vredesfonds van Ieper en het In Flanders Fields Museum, een spraakmakende persoonlijkheid uit die de boodschap van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in Vlaanderen actualiseert vanuit zijn eigen betrokkenheid en kennis. Na dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, burgemeester van Hiroshima en voorzitter van Mayors for Peace, is de Britse journalist Robert Fisk aan de beurt. Als zoon van een WO1-veteraan en buitenlandscorrespodent voor The Independent in het Midden-Oosten verwierf Fisk groot zicht in het wezen van de oorlog vroeger en nu.
Zijn talrijke artikels, zowel als zijn essaybundel The Great War for Civilisation, hebben hem een gezaghebbende stem in het altijd actuele debat voor oorlog en vrede gegeven. Op 11 november is Robert Fisk eregast van het stadsbestuur bij de herdenkingen van de Wapenstilstand.
De rede uitgesproken door Robert Fisk wordt afgerond met een recital van liederen van componist/soldaat Ivor Gurney door April Frederick en Amy Sybel (UK).

11:00 Speciale Last Post Plechtigheid aan de Menenpoort n.a.v. de 91st verjaardag van de Wapenstilstand. Het is mogelijk om de Last Post te volgen op de Grote Markt op een groot scherm.
12:30 Beiaardconcert door de stadsbeiaardier Ludo Geloen met gasbeiaardier Elisabeth Vitu.

11:00 Plechtigheid aan het Indische Monument bij de Menenpoort. Op de vestinge, ten zuiden van de Menenpoort. Mensen die niet in staat zijn om trappen op te lopen, er bevind een hellend pad op de Guido Gezelleplein. Wanneer je op de vestingen bent, hoef je enkel terug keren via de vestingen tot aan de Menenpoort.

Tentoonstelling - Louis Raemaekers
Oorlogsgetuige Louis Raemaekers was politiek cartoonist van de Nederlandse krant De Telegraaf. Zijn bijtende spotprenten tegen de Centrale Mogendheden werden vanaf het begin van de oorlog heel snel wereldberoemd in het geallieerde kamp.
De tentoonstelling toont a.d.h.v. de eigen collectie en talrijke bruiklenen het oorlogswerk van Louis Raemaekers als oorlogsgetuige, maar ook hoe zijn werken werden ingezet voor de geallieerde zaak en iconen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden.

In 2008, over 50.000 red cardboard poppies were planted on the banks of the Menin Gate, vreating a field of red, that captured the imagination of all those that visited Ypres on the 11th November. Following from successful feedback from the lst year, we will once again be planting poppies to commemorate lives lost during the First- AND Second World War. Each poppy will have a personal dedication on, written by supporters of the Royal British Legion and the Last Post Association, the 2 organisations. The poppies wil be hand planted o, Monday 9th november by a team comprising individuals fromt the Royal British Legion and the Last Post Association. There will also be spare poppies avaible at the foot of the Menin Gate to allow people to write their own messages should they wish to do so. The poppy field will be open from Monday 9th November until Friday 13th November.

The wars of the past have inspired today's and tomorrow's peace. Every year the city of Ypres, the Flanders Fields museum and the Flemish Peace Institute invite a prominent personality to forulate his vieuws on peace and reconciliation in a speech elevenht of November lecture. This year the british journalist Robert Fisk is our guest. He is son of a World War 1 veteran and foreign correspondent of the Independent in the Middle-East. His many articles and his essay "The Gret War for Civilisation" have given him an important opinion in the actual debate on war and peace.

Exhibition - Louis Raemaekers
Louis Raemaekers was political cartoonist fromt the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. Raemaekers acquired fame and international notoriety during the First World War. His caustic political cartoons, which poked fun at the Central Powers, drew considerable attention from the Allied camp.
The exhibition mainly draws on the own possessions and many loans from public collections. The exhibition also aims to demonstrate how the work of an artist can be used for the 'good cause' and how quickly some cartoons where distributed throughout the world to become 'icons'.
