Bayonet-lugs kwamen enkel voor op laat-oorlogse M1 Carbines. Of post-war omgebouwde carbines

Uit 'US INFANTRY WEAPONS OF WORLD WAR II' van Bruce Canfield:

As front line reports on the use of the M1 Carbine began to be analyzed some problems were identified. Other than the lack of short range stopping power alluded to previously, the following complaints about the carbine were also noted.
1) The rear sight only had elevation for 150 and 300 yards and had no windage adjustment. Tis obviously could limit the carbine's accuracy at longer ranges.
2) The push button magazine release was often mistaken for the safety. This had the embarrasing, if not fatal, result of dropping the magazine from the weapon rather than releasing the safety.
3) There was no provision for mounting a bayonet on the carbine. The merits of a bayonet on such a weapon can be debated, but this was still seen as somithing of a handicap.
4) The carbine was not capble of full automatic fire.
As the firepower doctrine of warfare became even more important during WW II, many soldiers called for a selective-fire version of the carbine. Some carbines are reported to have been field modified to be capable of fully automatic fire operation.
These shortcomings were duly noted and modifications were tested to eliminate them. A rear sight with windage and elevation adjustments was developed and eventually adopted. A rotary safety to replace the unsatisfactory push button mechanism was likewise approved an placed into production. A wider front band assembly was used for a short time before being replaced by an improved barrel ban assembly, the T4, wich incorporated a bayonet lug. A special bayonet, the M4 bayonet-knife was adopted for use with the T4 front band. Virtually all of these improvements were adopted fairly late in the carbine's production run; not all of the manufacturers were able to incorporate these modifications into their production lines before their carbine contracts were cancelled. The overwhelming majority of carbines seeing service in WW II did not have any of these updated features, although they were added to the weapons during subsequent post-war arsenal rebuilds.
