SEN. Richard Gordon, co-chair of the World War II 60th Anniversary Philippine Organizing Committee, on Tuesday hailed a Hollywood movie depicting the heroism of Filipino guerrillas and American soldiers in liberating 500 prisoners of war from a Japanese camp in Cabanatuan City during World War II.

A statement sent to media organizations also said Gordon earlier urged the film producers to make a special effort to promote the film among Fil-Am communities in the United States. It could redirect the attention of the US Congress to the veterans’ full equity bill, Gordon said.

The movie entitled “The Great Raid,” is about to be released in the US and will be shown next week in Philippine theaters. Gordon said the film put a face on Filipino veterans of World War II who are still seeking equal recognition with GI counterparts for their role in fighting the Japanese forces in World War II.

Based on the best-selling book “Ghost Soldiers” by Hampton Sides, the Miramax Films

Producer Marty Katz reportedly responded to Gordon’s suggestions with enthusiasm. Gordon and Katz met last Feb. 7 during a special screening in Makati.

In an e-mail dated July 26, Katz said he had assigned two Miramax senior executives in marketing and publicity—Martha Morrison and Julie Fontaine—to oversee worldwide promotions
