The STuG III at the picture is the STuG of Major Kurt Kühme. The book "German Armored Units at Arnhem" writes about this picture;
Next Day, Wednesday, 20 September, the brigade commander, Major Kurt Kühme, drives towards Oosterbeek in his Sturmgeschütz. Reporter Jacobsen goes with him, and takes pictures when the STuG stops somewhere. Here, they are at the junction of Bovenover and Onderlangs. In the previous day's fighting, Kühme's STuG had received a direct hit on the armor plating (left in the photo) on the right hand side by the gun. A large dent and the disappearance of the Zimmerit (non metallic protection layer against magnetic mines and "sticky bombs") shows this (BA 497/3529/3).

Die betreffende foto is gemaakt op 19 september in de middag. Oberwachtmeister Josef Mathes ontving posthuum op 4 oktober het Ridderkruis. Hij is voorgedragen op 25 september onbekend door wie en voor welke actie(s) specifiek.
Wie verantwoordelijk is voor zijn dood is onbekend aangezien er 4 verschillende Britse batalions doorelkaar in dat gebied waren. Het is zelfs niet bekend waar Mathes precies is gesneuveld. Het feit is dat op die dag geen enkele sturmgeschutz van Brigade 280 verloren is gegaan. Wel bekend is dat verschillende waaronder die van hemzelf eerder, door PIAT granaten geraakt zijn.

I also read the story of Wybo Boersma. Boersma writes that the commander in the STuG turret is Oberwachtmeister Josef Mathes. Other references are writing that Major Kurt Kühme is standing in the turret. Who is right?
The only reference I have is the book "German armoured units at Arnhem, September 1944". I my opinion this book is very detailed but it can be wrong off course.
It is difficult to say by which British battalion Oberwachtmeister Josef Mathes exactly was shot. At that moment four British battalions were situated in that area.
It is also difficult to say when the picture of the STuG at Onderlangs exactly was taken. The book "German armoured units at Arnhem, September 1944" writes that the picture is taken on September 20th 1944. Other references are writing that the picture should be taken a day earlier at September 19th.
